Front Panel Overlay F.A.Q.
Q. Who should use your HW-16 overlay?
A. Everybody. Our chicken died, we need the egg money. Seriously, we are producing these for your average Heathkit / Boat-Anchor / Glowbug fan that buys his or her equipment for the joy of both using and tinkering on it, but they still want it to be something they can be proud to look at and show off to their buddies.
Q. Is the overlay hard to install?
A. No. By following our easy-to-understand directions, anyone can install our product with no problems. Also, we're available by e-mail to answer your installation questions. We might be down to the pasture or something, but we promise we'll get back to you a.s.a.p..
Q. What if I still have problems anyway? Am I out of luck?
A. Nope. We want you to end up with a good looking end-product that you're happy with. Please feel free to contact us by e-mail at our
help desk at any time. We'll endeavor to get you past any problems that might come up.
Q. Will your overlay make my HW-16 panel "mint"?
A. Well, no. They will make it look excellent, but not "mint". In order to be considered "mint" you'd need to send your panel out and have it silk-screened. You could probably buy several nice HW-16's for what that costs!
Q. What advantages does your overlay have over silk screening the original?
A. Outside of the considerably broad difference in price, we like to note that the vinyl is quite durable and rub-resistant. Also, we think it's easier for the average ham to fix holes and modifications with our overlay.
Q. What about paint color match?
A. Truthfully, the original colors for the HW-16 seem to range "all over the place" from a light mint sort-of-green to kind of a "sea-foam" turquoise, and trimmed in dark-green to nearly black. We chose our ink colors in a way that we felt would put them "somewhere in the middle" of those ranges.
Q. Will the overlay have the same texture as the original?
A. Like the paint, the original texture varied considerably. It could be anything from a wavy-wrinkled to a finely-grained surface. The texture of your finished product is influenced by the surface texture of your panel prior to application of the overlay. The provided instructions show you how to create a very nice-looking wrinkled texture real easily, if you so desire.
Q. Is there any way I can bribe you to put my overlay on for me?
A. Sure, although if you can stick a postage stamp on a letter, you're pretty well qualified to do it yourself. If you really want us to do it, you can send your panel to us. As of 1/1/08, we charge an additional $12.50 (plus return shipping) to install an overlay on a "straight" panel. Texture-undercoating is available for a small upcharge. Pricing is subject to change without notice.
Q. What do you mean by a "straight" panel?
A. By "straight", we mean the panel's surface is basically ready for application. We'll sand it a little, but "straight" means no holes to be plugged, no gouges or pits in the metal to be filled, no rust to be removed, etc. We can fix those things for a little higher price, based on time and material. And like we mentioned, we can apply texture-undercoat for a small up-charge. Contact us for an estimate.
Q. Will you be making any overlays for other ham radio equipment?
A. We're iin the process of developing some already. What would you like to see? Let us know your desires. We may be able to accommodate you.
